Exploratory Talk in Science

Resources developed with Medway EMA and Science consultants and ASTs

These activities were developed with Alice Adesina (EMA consultant), Heather Millington (Science consultant), Mark Barley and Alec Stride (Science ASTs) in Medway LA during 2009 and disseminated at the ASE annual conference in Nottingham in January 2010. These resources are still in development and more will appear online through this year. These are resources that encourage pupils to talk their way into understanding science concepts. Evidence suggests that opportunity for exploratory talk and encouragement to collaborate on problem solving, helps pupils to think scientifically rather than just memorise facts. Collaborative classrooms help learners access English while sharing their scientific knowledge. We welcome comments and suggestions for improving these activities.

We have now trialled these activities at Rainham Mark Grammar School with pupils from Y7 to 12 and will be revising them in the light of their evaluations. We'd really welcome comments and evaluations from you as soon as possible so we can put these activities online for everyone.
